Eternel Septembre

Love your Plugin ?

Theme Big

Not all WordPress plugins are created equal. There are some plugins, loved and used by many, that are absolutely horrific in terms of your site’s performance. Conversely, there are plugins that virtually no one uses that are absolutely fan-damn-tastic. With that said, unfortunately most plugins fall into the former category rather than the latter.

The Down Low on Plugins

So, here a few golden rules of using WordPress plugins:

1. Only use a plugin if three things are true:

Note: The third point is especially important!

  • You absolutely must have the functionality offered by this plugin
  • You can’t easily accomplish the same functionality without a plugin
  • The damage done to your site’s performance by activating this plugin does not outweigh what you gain by using this plugin.

I constantly see people using plugins that possess absolutely zero benefit to their site. Actually think about what a plugin is going to do for your site before you install it.

2. If you are using more than 10 plugins you’re probably using WAY too many

If you’re using 5 plugins to create thumbnail images for your recent, popular, and similar blog post lists, there is something seriously wrong. With a relatively small amount of research, and a very small amount of php/html/css knowledge, you can create something similar with zero plugins. The same can be said for so many of the popular plugins in existence right now.

3. Only use plugins that are routinely updated

This is very important. You don’t want your website depending on something that was last updated in 2007. Seriously. Would you let your car go three years without an oil change? C’mon now. Think about this…if your plugin hasn’t been updated in years, it probably won’t be ever again. What does that mean? Eventually it will break because of a WordPress update and you’ll be up poop creek without a paddle.

Conversely, if you find a way to do something without a plugin, you’ll have the solution and, most likely, the knowledge to fix that solution if a WordPress update ever breaks it.

The Bright Spots

Alright, enough gloom and doom. Let me point you in the direction of some really amazing plugins that are lightweight, clean, fast, and…useful!

Akismet

Akismet is the best comment spam control on the market. You’ll never have to worry about approving comments again (unless you have a very large blog). The best part is, there’s no strain on your server since it runs completely on WordPress’s servers. Additionally, because it was created and is developed by WP, you know its not going anywhere.

Login Lockdown

One of the bad things about WordPress is that there is no way to protect against brute force attacks. If you don’t know, that’s when a hacker sets up a program to enter your username along with every conceivable password until one works and they gain access to your site. Obviously, if you run a popular website, its likely that someone will try to hack it at some point. Login Lockdown isn’t a foolproof solution (I’m not sure there is one), but its pretty good. Check it out.

WP Total Cache

WP Total Cache is used by major WordPress blogs such as Mashable, and John Chow. It has the capability to speed up your site by caching just about anything running on your site.

The Rub

In the end, there are a lot of plugins that are really great and can do you a ton of good. Besides the ones in this article, I can think of at least 10 more that are very useful for the right site. With that said, be vigilant, do your research, and make sure you find what’s right for you.

Whatever happened to labor?

via Seth's Blog de Seth Godin le 03/09/10

Not Labor with a capital L, as in organized labor unions. I mean labor as in skilled workers solving interesting problems. I mean craftspeople who use their hands, their backs and their heads to do important work.

Labor was a key part of the manufacturing revolution. Industrlalists needed smart, dedicated, trained laborers to solve interesting problems. Putting things together took more than pressing a few buttons, it took initiative and skill and care. Labor improvised.

It took thirteen years to build the Brooklyn Bridge and more than twenty-five laborers died during its construction. There was not a systematic manual to follow. The people who built it largely figured it out as they went.

The Singer sewing machine, one of the most complex devices of its century, had each piece fitted by hand by skilled laborers.

Sometime after this, once Henry Ford ironed out that whole assembly line thing, things changed. Factories got far more complex and there was less room for improvisation as things scaled.

The boss said, "do what I say. Exactly what I say."

Amazingly, labor said something similar. They said to the boss, "tell us exactly what to do." In many cases, work rules were instituted, flexibility went away and labor insisted on doing exactly what they had agreed to do, no more, no less. At the time, this probably felt like power. Now we know what a mistake it was.

In a world where labor does exactly what it's told to do, it will be devalued. Obedience is easily replaced, and thus one worker is as good as another. And devalued labor will be replaced by machines or cheaper alternatives. We say we want insightful and brilliant teachers, but then we insist they do their labor precisely according to a manual invented by a committee...

Companies that race to the bottom in terms of the skill or cost of their labor end up with nothing but low margins. The few companies that are able to race to the top, that can challenge workers to bring their whole selves--their human selves--to work, on the other hand, can earn stability and growth and margins. Improvisation still matters if you set out to solve interesting problems.

The future of labor isn't in less education, less OSHA and more power to the boss. The future of labor belongs to enlightened, passionate people on both sides of the plant, people who want to do work that matters.

That's what Labor Day is about, not the end of a month on the beach.

35 Entertaining 404 Error Pages

via Mashable! de Erica Swallow le 04/09/10

“404 Not Found.” These three little words can make any Internet explorer an unhappy camper. After all, who hopes to click on a broken link or stumble upon a moved or deleted page while cruising around the web?

Luckily, some web designers have chosen to end the misery of encountering a 404 error page. Instead of letting their site readers bump heads with a nasty dead-end error message, they’ve managed to squeeze a little entertainment out of it.

Below you’ll find some of the most entertaining 404 error pages on the web. We’ve listed them alphabetically to avoid playing favorites, but they’re all worth a look. Share your favorite 404 error page designs in the comments below!

1. 501st Legion

http://www.501st.com/404" target="_blank">501st Legion</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/501st.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

501st Legion is a Star Wars costume organization. It only makes sense that its 404 page would play on Obiwan's famous jedi mind trick with a "weak-minded" stormtrooper.

2. Abduzeedo

http://abduzeedo.com/404" target="_blank">Abduzeedo</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/abduzeedo.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Yes, Houston, a 404 is definitely a problem.

3. Apartment Home Living

http://www.apartmenthomeliving.com/404.html" target="_blank">Apartment Home Living</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/apartmenthomeliving.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

A nice ol' chap comes to your assistance on ApartmentHomeLiving.com if you run across a 404 error page. Click the lovely lady peering from behind the frame for proper navigation suggestions.

4. Astuteo

http://astuteo.com/404" target="_blank">Astuteo</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/astuteo.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

"Uh-Oh! SpaghettiOs!" You know you're a part of pop culture if your jingle makes it into a 404 error page. The popular SpaghettiOs marketing jingle is here to stay.

5. Blippy

http://blippy.com/username_available/404" target="_blank">Blippy</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/blippy.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Head over to Blippy's 404 page for an adventure. Keep clicking on the boy dressed in a unicorn outfit to discover a triple rainbow! Who knew a 404 page could be so fun?

6. Factor D

http://blog.factordstudio.com/404" target="_blank">Factor D</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/blog-factorstudio-com_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

In an ode to early horror films, Factor D features an appropriately horrific 404 error accompanied by a beautiful, yet terrified scream queen.

7. SureDev

http://blog.suredev.com/404" target="_blank">SureDev</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/blog-suredev-com_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Many 404 error pages apologize for the error. Not this one. It's obviously your fault.

8. Blue Daniel

http://www.bluedaniel.com/404" target="_blank">Blue Daniel</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/bluedaniel.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

This 404 error page is a beautiful depiction of "Track 404," a fictitious NYC subway line. Check it out to experience the full animation.

9. Brandstack

http://brandstack.com/404" target="_blank">Brandstack</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/brandstack.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

"You can click anywhere else, but you can't click here." Love it.

10. Center'd

http://www.centerd.com/error.html" target="_blank">Center'd</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/centerd.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with cute kittens.

11. Chris Jennings

http://chrisjennings.com/404" target="_blank">Chris Jennings</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/chrisjennings.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Most of us would like to run into a 404 error page just as much as we'd like to run into the Grim Reaper.

12. Colour Marketing & Design

http://www.colourmd.com/404/" target="_blank">Colour Marketing & Design</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/colourmd-com_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

When you're facing "sharks with laser beams attached to their frickin' heads," what do you expect? Definitely a 404 error.

13. CSS-Tricks

http://css-tricks.com/thispagedoesntexist" target="_blank">CSS-Tricks</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/css-tricks-com_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Well, that can't be good.

14. CSSscoop

http://cssscoop.com/404" target="_blank">CSSscoop</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/cssscoop.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Picking a 404 error page design that is consistent with your name is an appropriate move. CSSscoop chose a melting ice cream cone, with a scoop of ice cream, of course.

15. Digitalmash

http://www.digitalmash.com/extras/404/" target="_blank">Digitalmash</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/digitalmash.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Sarcasm in dire situations is always appreciated, right?

16. Good Old Games (GOG)

http://www.gog.com/en/error/404" target="_blank">Good Old Games (GOG)</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/gog.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Try not to make any missteps on GOG, or you'll end up lost in the cosmos.

17. HomeStarRunner.com

http://www.homestarrunner.com/404" target="_blank">HomeStarRunner.com</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/homestarrunner.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Insulting your readers doesn't usually help, but this 404 made me chuckle.

18 Hoppermagic

http://www.hoppermagic.com/404" target="_blank">Hoppermagic</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/hoppermagic.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Hoppermagic chose to stick to its brand imagery when creating its 404 page.

19. iFolderLinks

http://ifolderlinks.ru/404" target="_blank">iFolderLinks</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/ifolderlinks-ru_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

There's just something about a really frustrated baby that catches your attention. And if you've made it to this 404 page, you probably feel his pain.

20. Itchy Robot

http://www.itchyrobot.com/404" target="_blank">Itchy Robot</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/itchyrobot.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

If you can't think of something clever to say on your 404 page, just write exactly what your users are thinking.

21. Jackfig

http://www.jackfig.com/404" target="_blank">Jackfig</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/jackfig-haiku.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Jackfig added a creative touch to its 404 error page, with an inspirational haiku.

22. Jolie Poupée

http://www.joliepoupee.it/404" target="_blank">Jolie Poupée</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/joliepoupee-it_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Jolie Poupée, creator of eco-friendly children's clothes, serves up an audience-appropriate 404 on its site.

23. Mark Dijkstra

http://www.markdijkstra.eu/404" target="_blank">Mark Dijkstra</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/markdijkstra-eu_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

This 404 error page is reminiscent of the kitschy tourist shirts that your lousy friends and relatives buy you when they visit amazing places.

24. Merge

http://www.mergeweb.com/404" target="_blank">Merge</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/mergeweb.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Prithee, go medieval on your site's visitors if need be.

25. Milrayas

http://www.milrayas.com/404" target="_blank">Milrayas</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/milrayas.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Imagery always makes a 404 more entertaining.

26. OrangeCoat

http://www.orangecoat.com/404" target="_blank">OrangeCoat</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/orangecoat.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Some 404 error pages do a wonderful job of explaining to users exactly what caused the 404 error. OrangeCoat provides a fun decision tree for lost web surfers that is sure to help them along their merry ways.

27. Oroza

http://www.oroza.com/404" target="_blank">Oroza</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/oroza.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Have fun with colors, shapes and exclamations.

28. Sick Designer

http://sickdesigner.com/404" target="_blank">Sick Designer</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/sickdesigner.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

Sick Designer captures the depression that a 404 can cause on its error page.

29. Student Market

http://www.studentmarket.ro/405.html" target="_blank">Student Market</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/studentmarket-ro_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

How fitting that a student-centric site would feature an addition problem on its 404 page.

30. The Brand Surgery

http://www.thebrandsurgery.co.uk/404" target="_blank">The Brand Surgery</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/thebrandsurgery.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

This page just pops. We like it.

31. The North Face

For true entertainment value, why not just tell a story? The North Face does just that by creating a tale about link-eating mountain goats.

32. Tinsanity

http://www.tinsanity.net/404.shtml" target="_blank">Tinsanity</a>" src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/gallery/entertaining-404-error-pages/tinsanity-net_.jpg" width="400" style="border: none;" />

If, after searching for hours, you still can't find the page you were seeking, Chuck Norris probably has it.
